Weghorst – who is on loan at the Theatre of Dreams from Burnley – doubled United’s lead with a perfectly-placed rebound before the stroke of half-time.
And his finish quickly became the talk of the Old Trafford faithful.
One tweeted: “I believed in this guy since first day at Old Ttrafford.”
Another said: “Wout a goal.”
And another said: “Weghorst Wednesdays.”
One remarked: “Weghorst on fire, your defense is terrified.”
Another chimed in: “Fantastic anticipation from Weghorst to smash in the follow-up.”
United manager Erik ten Hag splashed out £2.5million to cut short his countryman’s loan stint with Besiktas and secure his services until the end of the season.
After his Old Trafford arrival, Weghorst said: “I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United.
“I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.
“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.
“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.
“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting involved straight away.”
Weghorst and his Manchester United team-mates will be back in action on Saturday, welcoming Championship side Reading to Old Trafford for their FA Cup fourth-round tie.
