DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I was told I had an incurable illness, I didn’t know how to break the news to my children.

The doctor said I only had a year or two left, but couldn’t give me an exact timing.

I can’t begin to express my gratitude – your care brought me so much comfort

I had started to experience a lot of pain and didn’t want to upset them. That’s why I wrote to you.

I’m a widower of 67, my son is 38 and my daughter is 36.

They both live far away, and have busy lives and their own families, and I feared becoming a burden.

You told me how important it was that I got support, and suggested I ask my kids to visit – even if I chose not to tell them I was dying yet.

You also recommended I contact Pain Concern (painconcern.org.uk, 0300 123 0789).

I can’t begin to express my gratitude. Your care brought me so much hope and comfort.

Seeing my children and grandchildren took my mind off my pain and I was able to break the news gently.
