A MAN has been awarded a Guinness World Record after claiming the title for the fastest speed over a mile in reverse.

Scott Burner from Nashville, Tennessee used his Chevrolet Corvette to bag the record with an average speed of 47mph.

Scott powered his way to the record in a time of 1 minute 15.18 seconds, which beat the previous record of 1 minute 37 seconds.

To claim the title, Scott had to have a non-modified car and be able to drive for one mile on a flat track and be timed by a professional timer.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Scott is seen getting 54mph in reverse in his Corvette on a stretch of road.

But the official track used in Kentucky called Bowling Green didn’t have a one-mile stretch in a straight line to achieve quite the same speed.

Scott’s YouTube channel is called ‘Always in Reverse’ and shows him attempting top speeds in various cars while going backwards.

In a Kia he managed 56mph before spinning, while in a Tesla he was disappointed to find it only did 16mph.

On his record attempt, Burner told WNKY News: “I went backwards up the front straight-a-way and after that it was simple, just drive fast.

“So on the first run I purposely beat the record, just in case the car broke.

“On the second run, I went through a whole quart of oil in a mile.

“That’s why all that smoke was coming out and the engine didn’t appreciate that.”

Scott says it isn’t as easy as it looks: “I turn around with my right hand on the passenger seat, put my left hand on the steering wheel and look out the rear window.

“It’s twitchy and easy to spin out if you’re not careful.”
